Ten Ways To Protect Your Sewer System

The more you protect your sewer system, the less money you'll need to spend on London sewer cleaning. Protecting your sewer can be done in a variety of simple ways by everyone in your family. However, sometimes it's necessary to supplement your measures with a professionally executed prevention systems.

Avoid unnecessary damage and repairs by abiding by these 10 useful tips:

#1 – Not everything that's "flushable" actually IS flushable

Labels can be misleading. The only thing that should ever be flushed down your toilet is toilet paper.  Everything else goes to the garbage!  You'll find this is a major adjustment that will quickly cut down on your need for sewer cleaning in London.

#2 – FOG is a no-no

Unfamiliar with FOG?  Fats, oils, greases are liquids that your drain has a tough time swallowing.  If you don't like drinking them, why would your sewer system?  These become solid obstacles once cool water washes through the pipes.

#3 – Liquid doesn't mean flushable

That said, most liquids shouldn't be flushed, not just FOG.  Paints, solvents, pesticides, and other harmful or thick household products should never be flushed or poured down the drain.  Just think how embarrassing it would be to explain that you need sewer cleaning in London because you poured a gallon of paint down the drain!

#4 – Pills belong at the drugstore

Homeowners often think that excess prescriptions can be flushed down the drain to keep them out of reach of small children.  However, this can cause serious obstacles in your drainage and force an emergency sewer cleaning in London.  Always bring extra pills from a prescription back to the pharmacy.

#5 – Backflow valves

Installing these is a little less simple, but thankfully, you have your London sewer cleaning experts to help!  Backflow valves make sure that extra flow from surcharged public systems don't seep into your home.  These will block your sewer line for a short period of time until the issue disappears.

#6 – Use your downspout properly

Are your downspouts connected to your sanitary sewer?  If they are, you likely found the cause of all your floods.  Excess water during heavy storms will create too much of a load for your sewer system to handle.  Disconnect these from your sanitary sewer to solve the problem.

#7 - Never underestimate the importance of clean troughs

Keep your eaves troughs clean.  We know this is a frustrating task, but it's much less frustrating than the consequences of dirty troughs!  If you find yourself cleaning the troughs too often, consider getting larger troughs and downspouts.

#8 – Watch your horticultural strategies

Planting trees or shrubbery near your sewer lines may not be the best plan if you want to prevent a back up.  Review your pipeline map before you begin planting.  Cracks in the sewage line will invite roots to grow in the crevice, causing a nasty obstacle in your pipes.

#9 – Elevate the grade around your house

By elevating the grade of your ground level around your home, you can drive the water to travel away from the foundation of your home instead of into your home.  You'll want to look at sidewalks, decks and patios, and driveways for reverse water flow as well.  All of these elements of your home may have eroded over time to bring water into the foundation of your home.

#10 – If it ain't broke don't fix it – if it is, call BEST!
